Quick report

The snowpack is generally stable and the wind has fully sculpted the landscape. Small, isolated wind slabs are stubborn to triggering, trending towards unreactive. There is very little snow available for transport even with the forecasted strong winds.

No recent signs of instability observed

Mostly light SW winds with the occasional moderate gust. Not a lot of snow available for transport due to to wind-sculpting over the past week, despite Sunday's small refresh.

Snowpack

  • Wind has sculpted the landscape, with many areas either wind-stripped or wind-pressed to the point of very little snow being available for transport. Small, confined terrain and sheltered northerlies are some of the only places snow may be available for transport
  • Observed wind slabs were small (6-12cm) and stubborn, trending toward unreactive. I received cracking in wind-stiffened snow, but could not trigger an avalanche on test slopes despite my best efforts.
  • Warm temperatures are helping settle out wind slabs, but we did not hit the threshold to worry about wet instabilities.
  • Despite the refresh Sunday, our snowpack continues to settle and shrink with our warm temperatures. HS was less than our last period of high pressure in protected areas (38-47cm). For those of you here in the winter of 2021-22, this feels a bit like deja vu.
