Quick report

Took an off-the-clock drive to see what the recent heat wave has done to the snowpack. I glassed multiple large faces in the Great Bear Wilderness along Highway 2 and in Glacier Park along the Sun Road.

  • Recent wet loose avalanche activity was minimal, despite observing numerous steep southerly slopes.
  • 2 soft-slab avalanches noted near a ridgeline on an east-southeast aspect around 7300 feet. These occurred during the recent warming and likely failed on a buried weak layer.
  • No other slab avalanche activity noted.
  • Cornices appear to be sagging and shedding some of their load from the recent warming.
