Quick report
Made a trip up to replace the Lionhead Ridge wind weather station (which is again fully functional). With good visibility we saw no recent avalanches and had no cracking or collpasing. There was only a little bit of active wind transport, as winds were light-moderate, and winds have been so intense since the last snowfall. The surface snow is pretty wind hammered in exposed areas, but there are still soft spots in the trees.
We dug a snowpit just east of the weather station, at 9000 ft, on a NE aspect. HS169. We got propagation in our Extended Column Test on the 20th tap (ECTP20) on the late January facet weak layer, down around 2 ft. On Feb 28th, we got an ECTP13 on this same layer on the same slope. This difference shows that while it's gotten a little harder to initiate a slide on this weak layer over the last two weeks, it's still very possible.
A quick investigation of the snowpack around 8000 ft showed that the facet layers under February's snow are still dry and could still be a problem at lower elevations when it snows again.
