Today we wanted to go look at one of the mid elevation NE facing avalanche bowls that we have in the Soldier Mountain Cat area. Similar to our upper elevation slopes, we saw a large amount of wind effect on the ridge as we approached the upper bowl. Cross loading was present. Wind slab thickness ranged from 5-15cm around the location. We were surprised to find the presence of 4-5mm NSF buried around 35cm. We dug two pits in the location and had the same results in each. Test results and snow pilot are attached below. We went out with the intention of skiing the bowl as a snow observation team, but decided to hold off after and use a lower angle route after find the propagating layer at 35cm which was unexpected. When we dug a pit in the same area at the beginning of this high pressure system and it was not reactive at that time. Finding these results today was a surprise. So far this layer seems isolated to this part of the operational area.
