Quick report

Observed the sled-triggered slide in Phillips, which was reported separately. From afar it seems like it was a wind-loaded pocket from the NE winds which then propagated across B-Z Bowl. Failure plane likely the 3/29 interface and not the deeper 3/20. 20230405-SS-AMu-R2-D2-I East facing B-Z Bowl @ 9,200'. Also observed an old slide likely from this past weekend's snow cycle, just above the crux of the standard skin track, seems like it ran a few hundred feet then terminated and didn't go full track down Ray's.

Weather

Cold in the AM, warming temps in the sun but light westerly and northwesterly winds kept things relatively cool in the upper and mid elevations.

Snowpack

Snow surfaces today weren't quite as slabby as yesterday in GTNP.  Regardless wind slabs were present from yesterday's NE wind event. Hasty pits revealed easy shears down 30-45cm on decomposing fragments and the 3/29 layer, depending on elevation bands. The lower elevations had taken a bit of ambient heat yesterday though without creating a crust, otherwise cold snow was found in the morning. However, East facing terrain warmed today by 13:00 and East and South will likely have a crust in the AM. 

Lower elevations which were out of the wind became damp by the afternoon, with a couple very small slides breaking on the upper most melt freeze crust - around 7,000'. This problem will begin to get accentuated higher in elevation as we progress into our warming trend. As temperatures warm, it will be important to monitor when the shed cycle may occur. Warming wind slabs above the latest interface were reactive today and will likely continue in their reactivity tomorrow.
