Found 8-14mm buried surface hoar below a 44cm slab of heavy 12/17 storm snow which was responsible for a variety of instability indicators: • small avalanches on road slopes • shooting cracks (though slope failed to slide, despite being steep enough) • large wumphing collapse which propagated ~50ft and shook snow off trees Total snow height was 101cm and the pack was strong below the surface hoar layer.
Avalanche
Observed several natural D1 avalanches on short slopes above the road. Failed on buried surface hoar at the old/new interface.
