Snake River Canyon

Today felt warm and humid on the skin track. Broken skies and light winds. Low elevation surfaces where getting a slight temperature crust as well as south facing slopes.

We were on the hunt for buried preserved surface hoar, it was present in most locations that we looked on N and E slopes at mid and low elevations. There are some places that don't have preserved SH, but there are facets just below the new snow.

Wind slabs are trending more stubborn, but it is still possible to trigger small, 6" deep pockets on leeward slopes. These are not big, but could pose a threat in extreme or consequential terrain.

Small wind slabs on very steep leeward slopes. The where somewhat hard to trigger and did not go very far. I was only able to find them on ridgelines that were exposed to the wind with a sizeable fetch. Light winds were barely moving snow onto leeward slopes. I also was able to initiate dry loose avalanches in very steep terrain at mid an low elevations. New snow and a heat crust at lower elevations has made these harder to trigger. We did note one that looked to be natural in very steep terrain.
