Avalanche Activity

Below approximately 3000 m the danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase gradually in the late morning.

The spring-like weather conditions from the late morning will give rise to a loss of strength within the snowpack. The danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase during the day. They can occur in particular in starting zones where previous releases have taken place. In addition a danger of ground avalanches exists, in particular on very steep grassy slopes. Backcountry tours, off-piste skiing and ascents to alpine cabins should be concluded timely. Avalanches can in some places be released in the old snowpack on steep shady slopes. These avalanche prone locations are rare and are therefore barely recognisable.

Snowpack Structure

The conditions are spring-like. The surface of the snowpack has frozen to form a strong crust and will soften quickly. This applies in particular below approximately 2600 m. The solar radiation will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack especially at intermediate and high altitudes. Towards its surface, the snowpack is unfavourably layered. Less snow than usual is lying. At low and intermediate altitudes from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying. In the last few days small and medium-sized avalanches were observed. This applies in all aspects in particular between approximately 2400 and 2800 m, as well as on sunny slopes in high Alpine regions.
