Avalanche Activity

LO for 31/12. Unstable windslab mainly on N-E-SE aspects above 1000m. Fragile cornices. Moderate hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Areas of unstable windslab will be present mainly on North through East to South-East aspects above 1000 metres with shallower and generally avoidable accumulations at lower elevations. Fragile cornices will be present mainly above these aspects. The older snowpack will be generally stable, becoming firmer in the colder conditions later. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Showers overnight falling as snow above around 400 metres, then mainly dry. Strong Westerly winds in the evening backing Southerly and become light by dawn and then backing Easterly through the day. The freezing level will be around 500 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Snow showers with gale force South-South-West winds over the summits today. The freezing level rose to around 1100 metres in the early afternoon before lowering again. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of moderately bonded windslab have developed mainly on North-West to North-East facing slopes above 1000 metres with better bonding at lower elevations on the same aspects, also above these aspects cornices are fragile. Elsewhere the older snowpack is generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
