A generally favourable avalanche situation will prevail.

Only a little snow is lying. Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on extremely steep shady slopes. Even a small avalanche can sweep people along and give rise to falls.

Snowpack The snow cover on south-facing slopes is thoroughly wet up as far as the high alpine regions, on north-facing slopes the snowpack up to elevated altitudes of about 2200 m is superficially moistened. As a consequence of dropping temperatures the snowpack surface freezes at heightened altitudes. The small amounts of fresh fallen snow lie deposited atop a rough-hewn and thereby more favourable snowpack surface over widespread areas. Only on wind-protected high-altitude shady slopes is the snowpack surface still expansively metamorphosed (faceted) and thus, less favourably layered. More deeply embedded inside the snow cover on west-facing, north-facing and east-facing slopes over widespread areas there are expansively metamorphosed (faceted) and loose layers evident. On the northern flank of the Alps these layers are often located in the uppermost part of the snowpack; in the southern Valais and in Grisons, the entire snow cover is expansively metamorphosed and loose in some places. Snow depths are far below average. At the measurement stations in flat fields at high altitudes they amount to only one-third to two-thirds of the otherwise customary values. Observed weather review Thursday, 23.02.2023 Nocturnal skies were predominantly overcast. There was precipitation registered from region to region. The snowfall level descended from 1800 m down to 1500 m. During the daytime hours it was quite sunny in the western regions, in the eastern regions skies were predominantly overcast. Fresh snow Between Thursday midday and Friday morning, the following amounts of fresh snow were registered above 2000 m:

• Bernese Oberland, Valais: 5 to 10 cm;
• in the remaining regions of Switzerland, less; or else it remained dry.

Temperature At midday at 2000 m, 0 °C. Wind Winds were blowing predominantly at light strength. Weather forecast through Friday, 24.02.2023 Nighttime skies on Thursday will be partially clear in the eastern regions, in the other regions of Switzerland skies will be overcast. In the Valais and on the southern flank of the Alps a small amount of precipitation is possible. On Friday in the western regions it will be quite sunny, in the other regions of Switzerland predominantly overcast skies are expected. In the southern regions a small amount of precipitation is anticipated. The snowfall level will lie at approximately 1500 m. Fresh snow Between Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon the following amounts of fresh snow are expected above 2000 m:

• Main Alpine Ridge from Great St. Bernard into Val Bregaglia and southwards therefrom: 5 to 10 cm;
• in the other regions of Switzerland, less; or else it will remain dry.

Temperature At midday at 2000 m, 0 °C in the northern regions and -2 °C in the southern regions. Wind Winds will be blowing at light to moderate strength from southwesterly to westerly directions to start with; in the afternoon at heightened altitudes they will increase in velocity and be blowing from westerly directions. Outlook through Sunday, 26.02.2023 Saturday On Friday night in the northern regions precipitation is expected to set in over widespread areas. On Saturday in the northern regions, skies will be heavily overcast, intermittent precipitation is anticipated particularly in the eastern regions. The snowfall level will gradually descend from 1600 m down to low lying areas. In the central and eastern sectors of the northern flank of the Alps up to 15 to 30 cm of fresh fallen snow is possible above 1500 m. In the southern regions it is expected to be sunny. As a result of the fresh fallen snow and strong velocity northwesterly winds in places, avalanche danger levels are expected to increase over widespread areas. Sunday In the northern regions skies will be predominantly overcast. Intermittent snowfall is expected down to low lying areas. In the southern regions it will be quite sunny. Avalanche danger levels are not expected to change significantly.
