Avalanche Activity

CM for 18/01/23 Cons hazard. Weak windslab N through E S aspects above 750m. Fragile new cornices.

Forecast Snow Stability: Additional weak windslab will build on East to South aspects above 750m; some North and North-East aspects also affected. Many of these snowpack locations are underlain by cold induced weak layers. Fragile cornices will be present over steeper lee slopes. Better stability on ridge crests and wind exposed locations scoured down to a firm crust. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Cold with snow showers throughout. Stronger North West winds. Observed Weather Influences: Cold with snow showers until early afternoon. Fresh to strong North West winds. ObservedSnowStability: Complicated picture of instability. Weak facetted loose grains underlies both deeper old windslab and thinner recently formed accumulations. Most affected areas are steep, sheltered North East through East to South aspects above 850m. Stability on some North and North East aspects poorer below this altitude where less affected by scouring. New weak cornices. Scoured crust present on many windward aspects. The avalanche hazard is Considerable
