Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Snowfall with redistribution of existing deposits will see new moderately to weakly bonded windslab developing on North-East through South-East to South-West aspects above 900 metres. Instabilities will also persist within deep deposits on West to North aspects. Gully tops, scarp slopes and corrie rims will be worst affected. Instabilities will be encountered at lower levels in steep sheltered terrain. Exposed slopes will be scoured and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The freezing level is expected to be sub 500 metres throughout. Snowfall overnight but easing to give a bright day. Winds will be gale force from the North-West overnight, veering and easing during to become light Northerlies by afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: A bright start to the day but becoming cloudy around the tops early afternoon. Around -2 degrees at 900 metres for most of the day. Winds, mainly North-West but veering to the North and strengthening to gale force. ObservedSnowStability: Moderately to weakly bonded windslab is present in wind sheltered locations on West through North to North-East aspects above 900 metres. Steep slopes, corrie rims and gully tops are worst affected. Fragile cornices and wind features have formed. Moderately bonded windslab is present below this altitude and on some South-West and East aspects. Wind exposed slopes are scoured and icy. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
