Avalanche Activity

The backcountry touring conditions are mostly favourable.

In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface. Weak layers exist deeper in the snowpack. Avalanches can in very isolated cases be released in deep layers and reach medium size. These avalanche prone locations are to be found especially at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack and at transitions into gullies and bowls. At low and intermediate altitudes only isolated small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized moist and wet avalanches are possible as the day progresses, in particular in case of releases originating from extremely steep starting zones that still retain some snow.

Snowpack Structure

The weather conditions fostered a strengthening of the snowpack in particular on very steep sunny slopes. Towards its surface, the snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. 2 to 5 cm of snow, but less in some localities, has fallen since yesterday above approximately 1600 m. Up to 10 cm in areas bordering Piedmont. Especially steep shady slopes high altitudes and the high Alpine regions: Weak layers exist in the old snowpack. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

Tendency

The backcountry and freeriding conditions are quite favourable. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface.
