In high Alpine regions a considerable avalanche danger will be encountered in some regions.

Snowpack

Between Monday and Tuesday there was precipitation over widespread areas which was very heavy on Monday night on the Main Alpine Ridge east of the Lukmanier Pass. The snowfall level descended down to 1800 to 2000 m during Monday night, in Grisons partly down to 1200 m. As a consequence of strong winds from the southwest to northwest, avalanche prone snowdrifts formed.On Wednesday, there will be a break in precipitation and it will be partly sunny. The wind shifts to southwest and blows moderately to strongly at altitude. The wind is expected to shift to southwesterly and be blowing at moderate to strong velocity at heightened altitudes.The fresh snow and freshly generated snowdrifts from this week have been deposited atop a thin old snowpack in the high alpine regions and on glaciers, and also in north-facing gullies and bowls above approximately 2800 m; in areas below that altitude the snow was deposited predominantly on bare ground. In the Bernina region there is already a thick snowpack at high alpine altitudes.

Outlook through Friday, 03.11.2023

On Wednesday night in the western and the southern regions, light precipitation is anticipated, which will fall as snow above 1600 to 1800 m. Between Thursday morning and Friday morning, heavy precipitation is foreseen over widespread areas. The snowfall level is expected to descent to 1000 to 1400 m. The focal point of the precipitation will again be the Main Alpine Ridge from the Lukmanier Pass well into the Bernina region. The wind will be blowing at strong to storm strength from southwesterly directions on Thursday, on Friday blowing at moderate to strong velocity from westerly to northwesterly directions. Avalanche danger levels are expected to increase over widespread areas on Thursday, significantly so in the major areas of precipitation. On Friday, avalanche danger will decrease somewhat over the course of the day. The avalanche situation in high alpine regions (above 3000 m) is already wintery. As a consequence of the forecast bouts of snowfall, conditions will become increasingly winntery also at high altitudes (2000 to 3000 m).
