Colder weather will allow the wet snowpack to freeze, gain strength, and limit any avalanche hazard. As a result, the greatest danger you see could come from difficult travel conditions. Expect breakable crust, icy surfaces, and numerous obstacles as you travel.

The Olympics received a healthy soaking Tuesday and Wednesday. Rain fell well into the alpine likely causing the upper snowpack to become wet. Now temperatures have cooled and a few inches of snow cover the ground. Expect the wet snow surface to continue to freeze Thursday and gain strength. This should limit any potential avalanche concerns. 

While avalanche danger may be limited, the mountains still contain hazards. Anticipate very demanding travel conditions including breakable crusts, heavy snow, and icy slopes. Warm, windy, and wet weather over the past week took its toll on the snowpack significantly eroding cover on steep southerly slopes and along exposed ridges. You may notice many obstacles reemerging. Give yourself extra time to deal with the challenging conditions and navigating around obstacles.

2020-21 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.  

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
