Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snowfall above 500 metres this evening, easing and then ceasing around midnight to give a dry day. Severe gale force North-Westerly winds overnight, backing and easing to become strong South-South-Westerly. 500 metre freezing level through until midday when it will rapidly rise above the summits during the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight snowfall to glen level, followed by a drier morning, then further snowfall above 700 metres this afternoon. Freezing level around 800 metres at midday. Storm force West-North-Westerly veering North-Westerly. ObservedSnowStability: Snowfall and constant drifting have formed localised unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations only on North-East through East to South aspects above 900 metres. Accumulations are present below this altitude but overlie bare ground. Deeper, more widespread accumulations are present on the higher, Northern boundary mountains of the main Cairngorms. Cornices are starting to develop. Exposed locations are wind scoured. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
