Lo esencial

Temperatures are expected to rise considerably today as a warm front stalls over the Mount Shasta region. With mostly clear skies, and freezing levels around 9,500 feet, expect the snowpack to destabilize. Natural avalanches are possible above treeline, where warming hasn't happened in quite some time. Human triggered avalanches are possible near treeline. Keep your eyes peeled for weakening cornices across the forecast area.

    The ridgelines around the forecast area have developed very large cornices over the course of the winter. With the expected warm temperatures today, these cornices will begin to fail. When they fail, imagine a sedan-sized ice block dropping onto the snow, pulling whatever unstable snow it can with it. As the temps begin to rise, avoid traveling underneath or on top of these cornices.

    This problem is mostly focused on areas that haven't seen warming in the last couple of days. Freezing levels will rise to 10,000 feet this evening. Such warm temperatures will surely have an impact on areas that have remained mostly cold through the season, such as above treeline terrain. If triggered, these avalanches have the potential to take you off your feet and bury you. Once you start to see pinwheels, roller balls, and wet loose sloughs, it's time to get off steep terrain.

    Temperatures today will be the warmest we've seen in a long time. This will surely destabilize the upper few inches of the snowpack, releasing in the form of wet loose avalanches. Stay vigilant today, when you begin to see roller balls, pinwheels, and wet loose sloughs, it's time to get off steeper terrain. These avalanches can take you off your feet and entrain a surprising amount of snow. Expect to find this problem anywhere the temperatures are rising.
