Lo esencial

Expect the potential for rider triggered loose dry avalanches on wind sheltered terrain steeper than 35 degrees today at and above treeline. These fast moving sluffs can easily carry an unsuspecting rider into trees or other undesirable and consequential terrain traps.

The Elkhorn mountains have received about 5" new snow during our recent Tuesday/Wednesday weather event. The new snow will need time to bond to the firm snow it rests upon. For today expect to see loose dry avalanches on very steep terrain greater than 35 degrees where the snow has been left undisturbed by wind. Wind protected slopes at and above treeline are the slopes most likely to be affected by this problem. Loose dry avalanches may seem relatively harmless. However, a loose dry avalanche can easily sweep a rider off his feet or sled and carry him or her into trees or over rock bands.
