It’s not a great day to venture into steep, wind-loaded terrain. You could trigger avalanches large enough to bury you on all aspects. Stick to lower slope angles and sheltered areas where loose snow sluffing will be a more manageable hazard. Be wary of leeward start zones above you and terrain traps below.

    Extreme southwest winds deposited sensitive drifts on north and east-facing slopes yesterday. On those aspects, you may find dense, rippled slabs that crack around you. Winds have shifted to the northeast overnight and will increase throughout the day. Watch for snow blowing onto south and west-facing terrain as a sign that new slabs are forming. Expect larger drifts as you gain elevation. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions. Be aware of that kind of terrain above you.

    The new snow is soft and unconsolidated in wind-sheltered terrain. Sluffs can entrain enough snow to be a hazard on steep protected slopes where the most snow fell over the weekend. Loose-dry avalanches will be most concerning in areas with terrain features that elevate the consequences of an avalanche. Watch out for road cuts, gully features, or cliffs below you. Avoid very steep, confined terrain where you can’t let moving snow pass you by.

We have no observations from above treeline yesterday except for the obvious and intense blowing snow across the Sierra Crest. Near treeline, forecasters found sensitive wind slabs up to 18 inches thick. Most of these broke within the new snow or at the new/old snow interface. In a few cases, cracks propagated widely through a weak layer of facets. 

Around 15 inches of snow fell in the northern part of the forecast area, with 6 to 8 inches in Bishop Creek. Faceted snow, or a facet/crust combo, lies underneath on shady and sheltered slopes near and below treeline. In the isolated areas where wind slabs rest atop facets, they may propagate wider than you’d expect. It will be worth monitoring the new snow atop these weak, sugary grains. It may be incohesive now but could become less predictable and more dangerous as it consolidates into a slab.
