Lo esencial

Wind loading and slab formations will create very dangerous avalanche conditions today. Human-triggered avalanches are very likely. Traveling in and around avalanche terrain is not recommended.  A winter storm warning and an avalanche warning are in effect through Sunday morning in Mono County.

    Wind loading and slab development will create very dangerous avalanche conditions today. The snow that has been falling since the 21st has been exceptionally cold and dry creating blizzard-like conditions at times and transporting snow further than usual. Swirling winds around terrain features have caused cross-loading of slopes and wind slabs to form on all aspects. These slabs will be very sensitive to human triggers.

    Another foot of new snow is expected today with intense snowfall rates at times. Since the storm began on Tuesday, density changes in the new snow have caused instabilities in the upper snowpack. This new snow needs a little time to bond with the old snow and our colder-than-usual recent weather will add time to the bonding process. 

Avalanche Discussion

A winter storm is in effect through Sunday morning till 4 am. Winds will shift today out of the East, creating slabs on all aspects. With reduced visibility and blowing snow with cold temperatures, today will be a fierce day in the backcountry. The avalanche danger is high as copious amounts of new snow and wind blown snow will create dangerous conditions.
