Wind Slab avalanches will be possible at alpine elevations on north and east slopes.  These avalanches are likely to be small.  If you are traveling through deeper or dryer storm snow, than this is an indication that you are at an elevation where Wind Slab avalanches are possible.

    While we are lacking observations from alpine elevations, it is likely that by Tuesday morning there will be several inches of new snow from Sunday night - Monday night up high.  This snow was accompanied by winds from the southwest that were strong enough to move the snow onto sheltered north and east facing slopes, and create the potential for Wind Slab avalanches.  With only inches of snow, these avalanches are likely to be small, but could be big enough to knock a rider off their feet and injure them in more consequential terrain.

    On Monday the surface snow was melting from rain and warm temperatures to at least 7775 ft.  This snow was wet enough that the wind could not transport it, and I saw no signs of a wind slab problem at treeline elevations.

Avalanche Discussion

On Monday we had yet another round of mixed precipitation.  Similar to the last few rounds, rain and sleet were melting the surface snow to near treeline elevations.  The melting didn't seem to be penetrating the thick crust from our last event.  Most of our snowpack is characterized by the crusts from previous rain events.  Last week there were observations of weak faceted layers near the old snow surface.  These weak layers are only likely to have persisted in higher elevations that may have avoided today's wetter forms of precipitation, and for the most part they will still be fairly shallow (with only a couple of inches of new snow).
