Lo esencial

Although the snowpack is generally stable, small loose wet avalanches could continue to be a problem at low elevations. This issue will be minimal due to today's cloud cover and lower temperatures.

A storm will enter the area on Friday night bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds out of the southwest through Saturday. Anticipate avalanche hazard to rise significantly on Saturday and Sunday.

    Colder temps and cloud cover today will likely put the recent loose wet problems on hold and lock down the snowpack at the higher elevations. However, small loose wet avalanches may still occur at lower elevations, especially if precipitation is coming down as rain or a wet mix. Pay attention to fresh natural or human-triggered point releases, roller balls, and sluffing; loose wet slides are generally small and localized but could knock you off your feet, becoming hazardous where there are terrain traps or sluffing in consequential terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Above Copper Lake at 6000’ on a north aspect, we did find that some of our persistent weak layers (consisting of buried surface hoar and graupel) are persisting, but they are deep in the snowpack and unlikely to cause avalanches. This would be a very low probability but high consequence type of problem that recreators on machines might look out for on steep protected aspects.

Enjoy the increased stability and good turns to be found at higher elevations, but pay attention to weather and snow surface conditions throughout the day and the weekend. Strong southwesterly winds and new snow is forecast to begin Friday night. This will create storm and wind slabs that will bond poorly to the underlying crust and sugary snow surfaces.
