Warm conditions will increase the likelihood of wet avalanches on slopes facing the sun. Avoid travel on or directly under steep slopes where you encounter wet, heavy snow, or see signs of instability like rollerballs or fresh avalanches. Use caution in areas where you observe signs of wind-affected snow.

    Sunday will bring a combination of rising temperatures and strong sun not yet seen in most parts of West North. There is almost always uncertainty about the number and size of wet loose avalanches that occur with warming. But count on finding some amount of avalanche activity on southern aspects. Wet avalanches on shaded slopes are unlikely, but it’s still worth keeping track of all aspects at all elevations as the day warms up.

    Small wet loose avalanches in small terrain are a sign you could see larger avalanches on bigger slopes.

    Wind slab avalanches continue to be a thing around the Baker BC. Another small slab was triggered today high up on a north aspect of Table Mt, and a larger natural avalanche - possibly triggered by cornice fall - was observed on Ptarmigan Ridge. This adds to the list of two human-triggered slab avalanches reported on Friday.

    These four avalanches all released at or just below ridgeline on slopes with signs of recent wind loading. Track changes in snow depth and stiffness as you gain elevation or change aspects. Don’t forget to look for typical signs of wind loading like cornices and scoured or rippled snow surfaces. Find small, wind-loaded slopes or features to test wind slab reactivity. When in doubt just pick lower-angle slopes when traveling in areas where the wind has been at work.

Avalanche Discussion

An observer on Ptarmigan Ridge in the Baker Backcountry reported widespread, wind-affected snow on Saturday. Conditions varied from stiff wind slab to soft, settled powder that could still be found in sheltered areas. In addition to the two new avalanches mentioned above, informal tests showed a poor bond between the fresh wind slab and the softer snow below.

Continued cool temperatures have kept melting and settlement to a minimum at mid and upper elevations, but expect that to change in the coming days. They have also allowed for faceting in the 20-45cm of snow that has fallen since Nov 23rd. This snow sits on a prominent crust that has been found at nearly all elevations including well up into the alpine. Sun crust is found on the snow surface on steeper south aspects.
