We have issued an Avalanche Warning through the National Weather Service. Heavy snowfall and strong winds will make very dangerous avalanche conditions, and travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. We expect to see large natural avalanches failing 2-4' deep within the new and windblown snow. Some may fail on deeper weak layers, reaching up to 3 to 6'  deep by the end of the day. None of this will help the ongoing glide avalanche cycle, which has involved avalanches failing at the ground, taking out the entire season's snowpack. All of these large avalanches have the potential to run into lower elevation runout zones.

    Recent Avalanches: Glide avalanche activity has continued from Girdwood to Summit Lake. Two large glide avalanches released just south of the Seattle Ridge uptrack, and one large glide crack has opened up directly above the uptrack. There have not been any reported human-triggered avalanches in Turnagain Pass this week.

    Avalanche conditions will be very dangerous today. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. We are expecting anywhere from 1.5 to 3" snow water equivalent (SWE) in Girdwood and Turnagain Pass by tonight, which will equal 1 to 3 feet of snow at upper elevations. The rain line looks to be at around 1500'. This heavy precipitation will be accompanied by strong easterly winds averaging 50 to 60 mph with gusts of 75 mph or higher. All of this snow and wind will make large natural avalanches failing within the new snow likely. This storm will be loading a snowpack with several buried weak layers, making larger avalanches failing deeper in the snowpack likely. See Problem 2 for more on this.

    We are tracking two layers of buried surface hoar that have been showing signs of concern since last week's storm and are likely to wake up today. By the time the snow finishes these layers will be anywhere from 2 to 5' deep and have the potential to propagate long distances, making for very large avalanches. These may start failing naturally as the new snow adds stress to the snowpack, and they have the potential to run long distances into low-elevation runout zones.

    Widespread glide avalanche activity is expected to continue throughout our forecast zones. These have been releasing on all aspects, and some avalanches have occurred in well-traveled areas. Today's storm will cover existing glide cracks, making them very hard to identify. This is just one more reason to avoid any terrain with steep slopes overhead, and will be something important to pay attention to after the storm passes.
