Our biggest concern in Summit is a slab avalanche that is likely for a human to trigger today due to the strong winds blowing snow into drifts and rain falling on a relatively dry snowpack. Both of these natural inputs of blowing snow and rain are adding stress to a few different buried weak layers within the snowpack. This problem can be completely avoided by sticking to slopes less than 30 degrees.
Wet Loose: Natural wet loose avalanches are possible and human triggered are likely today. Numerous natural wet loose avalanches were observed in Girdwood yesterday between 2,500' and 3,500'. Summit didn't receive nearly the rainfall totals that the coastal areas did, but the snowpack in Summit is generally more weak. It doesn't take as much water to cause a weak snowpack to fail. This problem exists below 3,000' where rain has fallen onto a relatively dry snowpack. Luckily, this problem is one of the easier ones to manage, but wet snow can be difficult to escape if too much of it builds up. Roller balls are a good sign that we could trigger a wet loose slide.
