Low danger doesn't mean no danger.  Ease into larger terrain features and look for signs of unstable snow, rather than going full throttle into steep open slopes at upper elevations.

    The wind slabs that formed this past week are getting pretty darn old snow and likely trending towards unreactive.  That being said, observations are limited across the east-south, so I would still recommend identifying these wind loaded slopes and easing into terrain, rather than going full throttle into large open slopes above treeline.  These old wind slabs are lurking below cornices, on open slopes near and above treeline, and peppered through the alpine.  Keep an eye out for signs of unstable snow and reevaluate your plans if you do notice signs of instability.  Better yet, tell the avalanche center if you do notice anything worth mentioning!

    These will be the type of slopes you should ease into on Tuesday.  Steep, open slopes at upper elevations that have signs of wind loading.  Look for signs of unstable snow as you travel.

Avalanche Discussion

On Monday an avalanche observation came in for the nearby West-South (near Morse Creek) showing a small (D1) skier-triggered hard slab in wind drifted snow.  This was on a west aspect at 6300 ft. This avalanche aligns with our recent east winds, so this illustrates how the distribution of shallow wind slabs is not just limited to east facing slopes- look for them on other aspects as well.  You may find similar conditions on western edges of the east-south zone.  Check out their observation here

An observer in the Green Lake area observed about 10-12 inches of snow above the Christmas rain crust. They also noted shallow conditions below treeline with hidden hazards present. 

On Saturday, NWAC Forecaster Katie Warren traveled into the Ahtanum Meadows area.  She observed approximately 7 inches of new snow at lower elevations and upwards of 15 inches at higher elevations.  This new snow sits on a variety of surfaces from dirt on lower elevation southerly slopes  to a stout rain crust that formed on Christmas in most other areas.  She also observed an old crown of a small wind slab avalanche that failed on the new/old interface about 1’ deep.  Overall, Katie found variable conditions from aspect to aspect, with southerly aspects holding very little snow and higher elevation, shaded aspects holding a deeper, more layered snowpack.
