Lo esencial

Strong solar radiation may increase the reactivity of recently formed storm slabs.

Avoid steep, sun-exposed slopes when solar radiation is strong.

Problemas de aludes

  • Cornices

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Unlikely - Possible
    Tamaño
    1–3

Cornices are large, looming, and can trigger large avalanches on the slopes below.

  • Storm Slabs

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Possible
    Tamaño
    1–2.5

Strong solar radiation may increase the reactivity of recently formed storm slabs, especially on steep slopes in the alpine.

  • Loose Wet

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Likely
    Tamaño
    1–1.5

Expect sunny skies to trigger wet loose avalanches on sunny aspects.

Snowpack Summary

20 to 40 cm of recent snow and southerly wind formed storm slabs that will be most reactive on lee features at upper elevations.

Below the recent snow is a hard crust that exists on all aspects to at least 2500 m.

The mid and lower snowpack is well settled and strong in most areas.

Confidence

Moderate

  • We are uncertain about how quickly the snowpack will recover and gain strength.

Avalanche Summary

On Tuesday, a couple of naturally triggered wind slabs up to size 2 were reported on northerly aspects in the alpine.

Several skier triggered size 1 wind slabs were also reported on steep slopes in the alpine.

Observations are currently very limited in this region. Please consider submitting a MIN to let us know what you're seeing out there.

Friday
Mix of sun and clouds. 20 km/h northwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -4 °C.

Saturday
Mostly sunny. 20 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -2 °C.

More details can be found in the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Avoid steep, sun-exposed slopes when the air temperature is warm or when solar radiation is strong.
  • Avoid steep, rocky, and wind-affected areas where triggering slabs is more likely.
  • Be alert to conditions that change with elevation, aspect, and exposure to wind.
  • Use extra caution around cornices: they are large, fragile, and can trigger slabs on slopes below.
  • Back off slopes as the surface becomes moist or wet with rising temperatures.
