Avalanche Activity

TO for 17.01. Softening at lower levels. Depleted snowpack with some minor instability on N to E aspects above 850m. Hazard Low.

Forecast Snow Stability: The depleted and patchy snowpack will soften at lower levels and any new snow will thaw. Above 850 metres some minor wind blown deposits will remain mainly on wind sheltered coire rims and ridge flanks, affecting North to East aspects. There will be some minor instability where these wind redistributed deposits lay over the older firm snow. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The high pressure will give dry conditions. The strong West winds will turn West-South-West overnight becoming fresh South-South-West. The freezing level will be around 1100 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Winds were fresh North-West this morning turning West- North-Westerly later. The freezing level was around 550 metres with some light drizzly showers and occasional brighter periods. ObservedSnowStability: There was a dusting of new snow on the summits with the snow line coming down to around 550 metres this morning. Below this level there is little snow. The remaining older snow patches are firm and stable. Some very shallow redistributed snow has developed on wind sheltered East to South aspects above 700 metres, these deposits are shallow and avoidable. The avalanche hazard is Low.
