Avalanche Activity

Icy conditions. Snowdrift patches at high altitudes.

Avalanche danger is low, but freshly generated snowdrift patches require attentiveness. Danger zones occur mostly in gullies and bowls, also behind abrupt drops in the terrain in extended easterly aspects. The risks of falling on hardened icy ridgeline surfaces require attentiveness.

Snowpack Structure

IN N/E/S aspects at high altitudes fresh snowdrifts lie accumulated, relatively well bonded with the old snowpack. Soft layers can still be potential weak layers, however. Windblown slopes expose a melt-freeze encrusted snowpack, a hardened and icy surface. In zones which were bare of snow prior to this precipitation the fresh fallen snow is too little to help backcountry tours.

Weather Synopsis

On Tuesday evening, briefly clear skies before on Tuesday night a warm front traverses the Eastern Alps. Thereby the NW air current weakens and the stormy winds ease. In addition, temperatures will noticeably rise. During the day, gray skies, minor snowfall possible on the northern flank of the Alps, though the snowfall level will ascend to about 1500m. Winds will be brisk from the west. At 2000 m: -4 degrees; at 1500m : -1 degree. Also on Thursday, gray skies but further rising temperatures.

Tendency

Due to warmth the danger of slab avalanches will slowly recede, the danger of loose-snow avalanches will increase.
