Avalanche Activity

GC12/1 Snow+windy unstable windslab sheltered gullies+N-E-SE slopes, old snow icy where exposed cornices fragile Hazard Considerable

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will continue to develop in wind sheltered gullies and on slopes with a mainly Northerly and Easterly aspect above 850 metres, other aspects may be affected by cross loading. Cornices will be fragile and prone to collapse. Slopes exposed to the winds will be scoured and icy at higher levels. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: New snow will continue to affect the higher slopes for much of the period becoming heavier and more persistent by afternoon. Winds will be West-South-West strong for a time overnight, then by morning generally Southerly fresh becoming strong through the course of the day. The freezing level will be around 900 metres overnight rising to 1200 metres briefly mid morning lowering to 800 metres later. Observed Weather Influences: There have been frequent snow showers heavy at times overnight and today. The new snow has been driven on by very strong, generally South-Westerly winds, the freezing level is around 850 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Unstable windslab exists and continues to develop in areas sheltered from the South-Westerly winds. Greatest accumulations are in sheltered gullies and Northerly to Easterly aspects mainly above 850 metres. Cornices are prone to collapse. The old snowpack where exposed is firm and icy at higher levels. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
