The calendar may have flipped to spring but prepare for a return to cooler, unsettled weather this week and a return to new snow avalanche problems.
Wet snow surfaces will begin to refreeze and lock up late Sunday night and Monday after a week of dry and mild weather. The incoming frontal system will bring a few inches of new snow on Monday along with strong W-SW winds.
You can stay safe and avoid shallow new wind slabs by avoiding steep slopes where you see wind deposited snow. Feel for firmer, denser snow above the old wet snow surface, watching for shooting cracks in the new snow. If you think you can trigger a wind slab avalanche, stick to lower angled terrain, ridgelines or scoured slopes.
