Avalanche Activity

Fresh snowdrifts

Avalanche danger in the northern barrier cloud regions is moderate above the treeline. The fresh snowdrifts require attentiveness, in places they can trigger a slab by large additional loading. Danger zones are found behind protruberances at high altitudes, near ridges and in general on leeward slopes in N/E/W aspects. Due to solar radiation, naturally triggered loose-snow avalanches can be expected on sunny slopes.

Snowpack Structure

In the northern barrier cloud regions 10-25 cm of fresh snow has been registered, with the focus in the Hochschwab region. Due to wind impact and fresh snow, new snowdrifts were generated which in places are prone to triggering. These drifts were deposited atop a moist and generally melt-freeze encrusted old snowpack surface.

Weather Synopsis

Wednesday will begin predominantly sunny and dry. During the daytime, some cloudbanks will pass through, but it will remain dry, the peaks free. At 2000 m: -4 degrees; in Niedere Tauern in the afternoon just below zero. Winds will mostly be light. Thursday will begin with sunshine widespread, and good visibility. Starting at midday, high-altitude and later intermediate-altitude clouds will move in from the south, but it will remain dry. Winds will be moderate to brisk from the south. It will be milder.

Tendency
