New snowfall lies upon buried sun crusts, wind-packed snow, surface hoar and old snow surfaces that were faceted during the recent dry spell. Soft slab avalanches and loose snow sluffs could be easily triggered in steep terrain at the upper elevations. Pockets of soft slab and loose snow sluffs could also be human triggered at the mid elevations. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully. These loose snow sluffs and soft slab avalanches are especially dangerous in cliffs areas and above terrain traps. Normal caution is advised at the lower elevations.

    At the upper elevations south to southwest winds have formed soft surface slabs up to two feet in depth that could be easily triggered by humans in steep terrain. Pockets of soft slab 6 to 18 inches in depth could be human triggered in steep avalanche starting zones and cliff areas at the mid elevations.

Avalanche Discussion

Periods of snow will continue overnight and into Tuesday afternoon. Additional accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are likely by Tuesday evening. Temperatures will be in the single digits and teens. Winds will back to the northeast at speeds of 10 to 20 miles per hour.Soft surface slabs will continue to gain depth and volume. Changing wind directions will distribute these slabs onto a variety of aspects. Loose snow sluffs will continue to be a hazard in steep terrain and will also become more significant with respect to size and distribution. Soft slabs up to two feet in depth and loose snow sluffs are likely to be easily triggered by humans in steep avalanche prone terrain, especially at the higher elevations in the forecast areas that have received the most new snowfall. Natural avalanche activity is possible in those favored areas. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be CONSIDERABLE at the upper elevations of the Greys River and Teton areas and MODERATE at the mid and lower elevations of those forecast region and in the Togwotee Pass area. Deep slab avalanches continue to be a hazard on northerly aspects above an elevation of 9,000 feet in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas.
