6:30a Update: Higher snowfall amounts and wind than previously forecasted. On Friday, you'll be able to trigger slab avalanches especially in areas where the wind drifts new snow near and above treeline especially as winds pick up in the second half of the day. You may encounter some small wet avalanches below 4,000ft.

    Watch for triggering avalanches on leeward sides of ridges and wind-exposed terrain features. Plumes of blowing snow should indicate where fresh wind slabs are being deposited. Steer around areas of deeper drifts and stiffer snow on slopes 35 degrees and steeper.

    Expect the bulk of the new snow to come overnight.  A midday shift from east flow to stronger westerly winds should form fresh slabs at upper elevations. Older slabs formed on the 28th, just over the Christmas crust. These may be difficult to trigger by Friday.

    You may be able to trigger avalanches in the new snow in wind-sheltered terrain. Use small test slopes and quick tests to check how the new snow slides. If you see cracks in the snow or test slopes that slide easily, steer around typical trigger points and steep slopes. This includes unsupported slopes, convexed rolls, and slopes over 35 degrees near rocks.  Look for heavier, strong new snow over softer layers as an indicator of the problem. With ongoing snow and warm temperatures, the storm snow may stick together as a cohesive slab.

    Expect temperatures to warm throughout the day with snow levels just below the top of the pass. If snow accumulates at lower elevations, you may see some small wet avalanches below 4,000ft.

Avalanche Discussion

On Thursday, observers in the Grace lakes areafound surface snow to be right-side up, getting progressively harder below the surface over the stout Christmas crust. Wednesday was a very reactive day with nurerous triggered avalanches, skiers and riders carried in avalanches, but fortunately no avalanche related injuries. Most avalanches were up to 1 foot deep in freshly wind drifted snow over the crust.  From December 23-27th the Schmidt Haus weather station measured nearly 5.5" of water equivilent with heavy rain and sleet forming a crust.
