Avalanche Activity

NC for 28/12. Areas of mod bonded windslab remaining on W through N to E aspects above 800 metres. Fragile cornices. Mod hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will start to slowly consolidate in the slightly milder conditions. However, areas of moderately bonded windslab will remain on wind sheltered locations on West through North to East aspects above 800 metres. Most affected will be coire backwalls and the tops of gullies. Below this level the snowpack will be localised and stable. Cornices will remain fragile. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will more settled than of late. The freezing level will be around 1000 metres. South-Westerly winds will back to the South-East. There will be a few very light snow showers. Observed Weather Influences: It was a wild day with strong South to South-East winds. Snowfall during the morning becoming more showery during the afternoon. The freezing level was around 400 metres ObservedSnowStability: Fresh snowfall plus the redistribution of existing snowpack has deposited areas of unstable windslab on mainly West through to North aspects above 800 metres. North-East and East aspects above this altitude still hold older deposits of unstable windslab. Cornices are fragile. In exposed windward aspects the snowpack is shallow, icy and stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable
