The avalanche hazard will be on the increase today at the upper elevations and in areas at the mid elevations where the new snow accumulates on slick old snow surfaces. Avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations and in areas at the mid elevations where the new snow is falling upon bare ground.

    As the day progresses strong southwest winds will create pockets of new soft slab on leeward aspects. At the upper elevations and on northerly aspects at the mid elevations these slabs will form upon surface hoar and hard crusts. Slabs could build to depths of 18 inches in isolated areas by evening. These slabs are expected to be easily triggered by humans in steep, wind loaded avalanche starting zones. Even small slabs can kill or seriously injure people, especially during early season conditions.

Avalanche Discussion

Skies will be cloudy with periods of light snowfall on Saturday. Accumulations of several inches are possible overnight and on Saturday at the higher elevations. Temperatures will be in the teens and single digits in the mountains. Ridge crest winds will be west to northwest at 10 to 20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to MODERATE at the upper elevations where pockets of new soft slab six to 18 inches in depth are expected to be poorly bonded to slick old snow surfaces. These small slabs could be triggered by humans who venture into steep, wind loaded avalanche starting zones and cliff areas. At the mid and lower elevations avalanches are unlikely and the general avalanche hazard is expected to LOW.
