Avalanche Activity

New snow and wet snow represent the main danger.

With the onset of the precipitation, the natural avalanche activity will gradually increase. As a consequence of snowfall above approximately 2000 m and the occasionally strong easterly wind, a dangerous avalanche situation will develop. Numerous medium-sized and large dry and moist avalanches are to be expected as the precipitation becomes more intense. Also bases of rock walls where hard layers are lying on a weakly bonded old snowpack are especially dangerous. In particular in regions exposed to heavier precipitation and at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions such avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and the danger is slightly greater.

Snowpack Structure

The sleet will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack over a wide area also at intermediate altitudes. Over a wide area relatively hard layers of snow are lying on a weakly bonded old snowpack. Individual weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind. Also bases of rock walls where hard layers are lying on a weakly bonded old snowpack are especially dangerous. In particular in regions exposed to heavier precipitation and at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions such avalanche prone locations are more prevalent.

Tendency

The snowfall will give rise as the day progresses to unfavourable bonding of the snowpack. As a consequence of falling temperatures and snowfall above approximately 1800 m and the occasionally strong wind, a dangerous avalanche situation will develop on Monday.
