While you are unlikely to trigger a large avalanche today, you could find small areas of unstable snow in sheltered terrain at middle elevations in eastern aspects. Look out for deeper snow or white smooth snow to identify these areas. Traveling on the icy, refrozen surface limits your exposure to potential avalanches, but will require the use of mountaineering equipment and the skills to use them.

    Strong and extreme west winds yesterday moved snow, but was not likely to productively build wind slabs across many terrain features. However, in sheltered terrain you could find small wind drifts in easterly aspects at middle elevation. Summer Lion Head Traverse is a sheltered terrain feature where forecasters found a small, firm, and stubborn wind slab yesterday. 

    Due to the high winds, these areas of wind drifted snow are isolated, and evidence may be hard to find. These slabs are likely to be firm and stubborn to propagate, but sustained cold temperatures may harbor some lingering instabilities. If you encounter one of these pockets, consider traveling in areas where the snow is scoured and wind textured, as triggering an avalanche there will be unlikely. Travel one at a time and assess the runout as a small avalanche over exposed rocks and trees would be consequential. You can also test the sensitivity by digging down to the interface of the old snow.

Today we have listed a wind slab problem as forecasters found a wind slab on Summer Lion Head Traverse yesterday. This problem is small, isolated, and stubborn, but is something you could encounter in sheltered terrain features today.

With hours of extreme winds, upper elevations are scoured so this problem is limited to the middle elevation band. An additional inch of snow yesterday was unlikely to add to the distribution of this problem, but may have added to the size. 

The wind slab on Summer Lion Head Traverse was found to have a strong-over-weak composition and 6-8 inches thick. This was on top of a melt-freeze crust from rain on 2/28 that still had moisture in the crust. As the snow continued to dry out with persistently cold temperatures yesterday, sensitivity may have increased. Use hand shears to dig down to the interface to assess sensitivity of any wind slabs you encounter today.
