Continue to avoid rocky and wind-affected slopes where triggering a very large avalanche remains possible. Hard slab avalanches two  to four feet thick may be triggered from below, above or next to steep slopes over 30 degrees. Travel on steep, rocky slopes is a roll of the dice especially over one of the many terrain traps in the area. Ride with caution.

    Triggering a dangerous avalanche involving buried weak layers remains possible today in steep terrain above 30°. Weak snow formed in early December is now buried ~2 feet deep in many locations and up to 4 feet deep in wind-loaded upper-elevation terrain. Avalanches involving these weak layers have been reported on most aspects at all elevations. 

    Obvious signs of instability may not be present before triggering a persistent slab avalanche. Slabs could be triggered from a distance by the first rider or even wait until the last person in your group is riding the slope to release. Steep, rocky, and unsupported terrain features are most likely to produce an avalanche. However, given the well-connected nature of the weak layer, avalanches can propagate long distances across slopes. Because of this, avoid terrain connected to avalanche paths, beware of what lies above you, and give runout zones a wide margin. Remote triggers were reported recently. For now, riding low-angle terrain less than 30° with no significant overhead hazard is the best way to avoid this problem.

Avalanche Discussion

Lots of good riding exists in Togwotee Pass but if you are considering riding a steep slope that everyone else passed up, think again. The slab sitting over weak snow may be thin enough to trigger but thick enough to bury you if triggered. Enough uncertainty exists in the snowpack currently that you would be wise to steer clear of rocky, steep terrain especially if it shows any signs of wind affect. Lots of remotely triggered avalanches over the past couple of weeks is all the evidence needed to understand the avalanche problem. You may not see any of the classic signs of unstable snow here, like shooting cracks or collapses, before triggering a slope. Keep a wide margin of error and a wide berth between you and steep, wind-affected slopes. You can not manage this avalanche problem except by managing yourself in the terrain.
