Avalanche Activity

Storm-strength winds

Avalanche danger is low. Isolated danger zones are found on north and east-facing slopes. Ridgeline older drifts generated by southerly winds can be triggered as small-to-medium avalanches by large additional loading. In isolated cases, small wet loose-snow avalanches can trigger from rough and rocky terrain.

Snowpack Structure

Fresh snallow snowdrift patches have been deposited on N/E facing slopes, mostly in Niedere Tauern and Northern Alps. The snow was deposited atop a melt-freeze crust. Older drifts are evident above 2200 m, particularly on extremely steep slopes in northern aspects, where there are soft layers deeply embedded inside the snowpack which are potential weak layers. At ground level the snowpack is moist-to-wet.

Weather Synopsis

On Thursday brisk to stormy SW-to-NW winds will be blowing at high altitudes, with varying sunshine interims and clouds accompanied by short showers. Temperatures will recede somewhat, the snowfall level descend from 2000 m to 1500 m in the evening. At 2000 m: 0 degrees at midday.

Tendency

Variably cloud conditions, intervals of sunshine, often strong SW winds. No significant change in avalanche danger levels is expected.
