Heavy recent snowfall, extreme winds, and a weak underlying snowpack will keep avalanche danger HIGH at all elevations today. Travel in or underneath avalanche terrain is NOT recommended.

    Although winds abated a bit yesterday afternoon, they picked back up during the night and have been consistently blowing hard from the Southwest at mid elevations as well as coming from the North in the upper elevations. The large amount of new snow (24-45inches with 4.5inches of water equivalent) widely available for transport across the landscape, forecasted additional snow this afternoon into tonight, and  increasing  SW winds throughout the day are the perfect recipe for significant wind slab formation. Avoid being on or underneath wind loaded slopes today and be cognizant of ALL ASPECTS for avalanche hazard in relation to dynamic wind directions. Avalanches could be very large and run long distances. Forecaster confidence is low due to a lack of field observations zone-wide and we are not recommending travel in avalanche terrain today. Mammoth moutain ski patrol saw significant wind loading, sensitive conditions, and long running avalanches with deep 4-12ft crowns yesterday. It will be a good day to get a beat on what has transpired before stepping out into avalanche terrain.

    The old shallow snowpack residing on  E-N-W aspects is weak and composed of faceted snow and temperature crusts.  It now has been loaded with upwards of 24-50inches of new snow with nearly 4. 5inches of snow water equivalent. This is a ton of weight and when combined with loading winds this makes for a hazardous and unpredicatble situation. During explosive testing, Mammoth mountain ski patrol saw significant avalanches running to the ground and initiating within the old weak snow yesterday. Crowns were from 4-12feet in depth.  Failures in this old weak snowpack may result in much bigger avalanches than expected and may be triggered by smaller avalanches sliding from above or by skier trigger. With limited to no obervations yesterday in the higher elevations, travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended today.
