Avalanche Activity

Increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and wind.

The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field. 5 to 20 cm of snow, and up to 40 cm in some localities, will fall until late morning above approximately 2200 m, especially along the border with France. The wind will be strong. Fresh wind slabs will form especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. The new snow and wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant, especially on very steep slopes. In high Alpine regions these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and the danger is greater. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2200 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. On steep sunny slopes below approximately 2500 m a little snow is lying. The snowpack is not distinctly layered. Shady slopes: The snowpack consists of faceted crystals and has faceted crystals on the surface. Below approximately 2000 m: As a consequence of rain a crust formed on the surface.

Tendency

Further increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and wind.
