Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. It is possible to trigger an avalanche on weak layers buried 1-3 feet deep. These avalanches can be triggered remotely - from above, below, or adjacent to slopes over 30°. Use caution where recent wind has deposited additional snow. Carefully evaluate the snowpack and pay attention as warm ambient temperatures can increase the sensitivity of avalanches.

    Moderate southwest winds combined with 5-7 inches of new snow have built slabs 1-2 feet thick in the upper elevations. You are most likely to trigger a windslab near ridgelines, below cornices, or on exposed loaded terrain features such as gullies and rocky outcrops. Watch for shooting cracks, drifts, and thick pillows. Small wind slab avalanches have the potential to step down to deeper weak layers and create larger avalanches. Move to lower elevations, or sheltered slopes to avoid this problem.

    Due to recent loading and a thin snowpack, triggering a persistent slab avalanche is possible. Expect to find weak, faceted snow layers buried 1-3 feet deep on all aspects and elevations except for due southerly terrain below 9000'. Slabs may be thicker in areas where wind has deposited additional snow. Over the past 72 hours, numerous natural and human-triggered persistent slab avalanches were reported with two remotely triggered avalanches yesterday

    Avoiding steep rocky slopes, unsupported convexities, and areas near wind-drifted features can significantly reduce your chances of triggering a persistent slab avalanche. These avalanches may not show signs of instability and can be triggered remotely from above, below, or adjacent to slopes over 30°. Use caution when managing terrain choices - even a small avalanche can have high consequences near terrain traps such as road cuts and creek beds. 

    Additional Discussion:

    Ambient warm temperatures can increase the sensitivity of avalanches. As temperatures increase throughout the day, the likelihood of triggering an avalanche also increases. Watch for areas where snow is becoming heavy, especially below 9000'.

Avalanche Discussion

There is a lot of good riding to be had on Togwotee right now. Slopes that are less than 30° and not blown around by the wind will provide great powder riding and the smallest chance of triggering an avalanche. Persistent weak layers like the faceted, weak, sugary snow at the base of the snowpack take time to adjust. Be patient as this happens. Avoid terrain traps like creek beds and road cuts with steep slopes above.
