Normal caution is advised near and below treeline. Above treeline, small human triggered avalanches are possible on leeward aspects where new snow is actively drifting or has drifted in days prior. Look for visual clues like lens shaped deposits, blowing snow and wind textured surfaces for areas that may harbor a wind slab. If the sun comes, small wet loose avalanches may be possible on solar aspects at lower elevations. Rollerballs and pinwheels are a good indicator that snow surfaces are losing cohesion. If these conditions develop, consider moving to a shadier aspect or gentler slopes.

    There is some uncertainty regarding the reactivity of wind slabs that may form today and those that formed in the last couple of days above treeline, especially at the uppermost elevations of Mount Shasta where observations are lacking. They are most likely to be found beneath ridgelines and around rock outcroppings. Today, strong west to northwest winds may erode older slabs today on the northern half of the compass and create new ones predominantly on southwest through northeast aspects. New slabs will be more reactive than those that formed previously. Wind loaded areas may appear rounded or lens shaped and exhibit some degree of surface texture. They may be difficult to assess for instability on steeper slopes without directly exposing yourself to the hazard, so consider moving around drifted areas. Overnight snow accumulations may also contribute to the problem, but this is more of a consideration for tomorrow. 

     

     

Avalanche Discussion

If the sun comes out at all today, watch for signs of wet snow instability on solar aspects near and below treeline. Natural and human triggered rollerballs and pinwheels are early signs that the snowpack may produce wet loose avalanches. In combination with cooler temperatures and moderate wind, the development of melt freeze crusts yesterday may inhibit this problem in certain areas. 

Since December 31st, the Old Ski Bowl weather station has recorded about 7.5 inches of water. Not a bad number! Unfortunately, high freezing levels resulted in only around 30 inches of snow accumulation. In combination with the Christmas storm, Mount Shasta City is now about 76% above average for precipitation since October 1.
