Conditions will be dangerous again in the backcountry today. You are likely to trigger an avalanche on wind-loaded slopes and those that face the mid-day sun, if it appears. Monitor cloud cover and  snow surfaces carefully; if surface snow becomes damp, you will be more likely to trigger an avalanche. Avalanches are likely to be around two feet thick and up to four feet thick on wind-loaded slopes. Natural avalanches involving all of the recent snow will be possible too, especially lower elevation slopes that face the sun.

    Over two feet of snow has fallen in portions of this zone in the past 48 hours. New snow and moderate westerly wind has formed  2-3 feet thick wind-slabs in exposed, mainly mid and upper-elevation terrain.  Additionally, the recent light-density snowfall has settled significantly in the past 24 hours. Relatively warm temperatures have sped up the process of slab formation which brings us to the concern about the potential for direct sunshine on slopes today. If the high February sun makes an appearance, it will weaken wind slabs and the settled storm snow, especially below about 9,000'. You'll also find that large wind slabs in the alpine remain reactive despite today's calm and clear weather. Don't be fooled by these conditions. Assess the snow carefully and consider the effects of the warmer weather on the snowpack.

    A small wind slab that was tiggered yesterday during a period of increased wind. Expect similar, but potentially larger, avalanches in wind loaded terrain today.

    A thin layer of weak snow was buried on February 6th. While we have not yet seen confirm avalanches on this layer but it has seen a significant amount of water weight  added in the past couple of days. Avalanches breaking 2-4 feet deep on this weak layer are possible today in steep terrain as new snow and wind stress the snowpack. This problem is most pronounced on the north half of the compass above 7,500’ on both sheltered and exposed slopes. Avalanches involving this layer also have the potential to propagate long distances across slopes, making escape difficult. These avalanches may be triggered without any signs of instability and could occur after multiple riders put tracks on a slope.

    Riding low-angle terrain and managing the new snow avalanche problem should be enough to avoid deeper avalanches. However, given the consequences of being caught in a slab at these depths, it is essential to build in extra margin around avalanche terrain today.

Avalanche Discussion

New snow and wind driven instabilities are subsiding today while those caused by settlement,  warm temps and the potential for solar gain increase. This zone is currently sparse in information with few recent observations leading to some uncerntainty in the forecast today. Travel carefully, dig holes to look for hardness changes and reactivity within the new snow as well as in the 2/6 layer.  Avalanches in the recent snow are more than enough to bury a person. Any avalanche running on the buried crust formed 2/3-4 may run fast and far.
