Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs require caution.

The storm force wind has transported the fresh and old snow significantly. The hard wind slabs of the last three days are lying on a crust in particular on sunny slopes and at high altitude. These can be released by a single winter sport participant. In particular on steep north, northeast and northwest facing slopes the avalanches can be triggered in the faceted old snow and reach quite a large size. Caution is to be exercised on wind-loaded slopes, and in gullies and bowls.

Snowpack Structure

In some regions 10 to 15 cm of snow, and up to 20 cm in some localities, fell on Wednesday. The foehn wind has transported the fresh and old snow significantly. Over a wide area wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. In particular adjacent to ridgelines at high altitude snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. As a consequence of low temperatures the snowpack can not consolidate, in particular on shady slopes.

Tendency

The solar radiation will give rise to gradual consolidation of the snowpack in particular on sunny slopes.
