Avalanche Activity

In the late morning danger level 4 (high) will be reached in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation. Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger. The danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase during the day.

As the snowfall becomes more intense the prevalence and size of the avalanche prone locations will increase in the late morning. The wind will be moderate to strong. The fresh snow and the wind slabs that are forming in particular above approximately 2300 m can be released easily in all aspects. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation avalanches are possible as the day progresses, even very large ones. Gradual increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches as a consequence of warming. Ski touring and snowshoe hiking call for extensive experience and great restraint.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area over a wide area 30 to 60 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until Sunday above approximately 2200 m. The southerly wind will transport the new snow. In some cases the wind slabs have bonded poorly with each other and the old snowpack. The old snowpack is well consolidated and its surface consists of loosely bonded snow lying on a strong melt-freeze crust. The high temperatures gave rise to moistening of the snowpack in particular at low and intermediate altitudes. In particular at intermediate and high altitudes there is still a very large amount of snow. Below approximately 2000 m hardly any snow is lying.
