Avalanche Summary

You can trigger a large and dangerous avalanche and you can trigger them from below slopes or from a long distance away. You may not experience the typical warning signs of instability such as shooting cracks and collapsing in the snowpack before you trigger an avalanche that breaks wider and runs farther than you expect. This is because the weak snow is buried around three to five feet deep here and it is more difficult for you to affect the deeply buried weak snow. The most dangerous areas where you are most likely to trigger an avalanche are where the snow is thinner such as the bottom of a slope, around trees or rock outcrops, or on some slopes that avalanched earlier in the season. To reduce your chances of being caught in an avalanche avoid traveling on or underneath slopes steeper than about 30 degrees that face west to north through southeast.
