Lo esencial

Clouds and wind increasing today, rain/snow forecast tonight. Be prepared to change plans should conditions deteriorate. The avalanche danger will be increasing in the days ahead.

Any remaining loose snow will be transported on to lee aspects from gale strength NW winds today. Avoid obvious areas of concern. As the front approaches winds may change direction, decision-making may become difficult. If in doubt choose a conservative approach. If you are keen today perhaps mid-elevations are your best options.

Recent Avalanche Activity

No recent activity reported. Some roller balling on N facing aspects.

Current Snowpack Conditions

The warming trend continued yesterday with loose wet activity on N facing aspects. Polar aspects remaining cold. Expect a light crust on sunny aspects after another frosty night. Start zones and steep entries are places where any remaining loose snow will be forming wind-slab conditions today. Gale strength winds forecast as an active front approaches our region. Remember, many hidden hazards sit just below a thin snowpack.

Mountain Weather

Mainly cloudy. Rain/snow in the western ranges, moving across our region tonight. Winds from the NW increasing to gale strength during the morning. The freezing level at 1900 m.

Sliding Danger

Slick conditions may be encountered under a light dusting of snow. Be prepared, you could be surprised of hard icy snow below 1600 m. Caution required in and around steep terrain.

Forecast Confidence

Moderate

  • We are confident the likelihood of avalanches will increase with the forecast weather.
  • We are uncertain if precipitation will fall as rain or snow.
