Avalanche Activity

NC for 10/01 Initial period of wet snow instabilities. Snowpack will start to refreeze and stabilise. Low Haz

Forecast Snow Stability: After an initial period of wet snow instability on steep North-West through North to East aspects above 900 metres, the snowpack will start to refreeze and stabilise. On these aspects in steep isolated areas some instabilities will persist at depth but these will be mostly protected by the strong upper layers. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Strong winds from a general West-South-Westerly direction are forecasted. Insignificant amounts of rain will gradually turn to light snow for a short period. The freezing level will lower to around 800 metres in the early hours where is will remain for the rest of the forecast period. Observed Weather Influences: A dry morning with light rain from midday onwards. Southerly gale force winds with the freezing level above summit heights. ObservedSnowStability: A gradual thaw has started to occur at all levels although this is more noticeable at lower levels. Areas of unstable wet snow instabilities developed on Northerly aspects above 900 metres as the freezing level rose. Old windslab accumulations which remain on North-West through North to East aspects above 900 metres continue to consolidate. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
